Mary E. Bontrager

Mary Ellen Bontrager peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 86 on July 10, 2019.  She was born April 19, 1933 in Greentown, Ohio to the late Mose and Fannie (Wittmer) Kurtz.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Merle Bontrager; brother, Alvin Kurtz; sisters, Edna Slabaugh, Catherine Nisly and Dorothy Gingerich; and her son-in-law, Mike Mayer.

She married Merle on March 13, 1955 and they moved to Sarasota in 1976 from Hartville, Ohio.  She was a member of Bayshore Church, a prayer warrior and prayed for her family daily.  She loved hosting meals, traveling and spending time with family.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Glenda Yoder (Bert) of Hartville, Ohio; Charlene Pillot (Pat) of Sarasota; LuAnn Mayer of Sarasota; son, Merlin Bontrager (Daphne) of Sarasota; sisters, Louise Wyse of Indian Land, SC; Shirley Troyer (Mart) of Sarasota; brother, Dan Kurtz (Joann) of Hartville, Ohio; brother-in-law, Mose Gingerich of Hartville, Ohio; grandchildren, Allison (CJ), Eric (Jenny), Ryan (Carrie), Krista, Brien, Brandon and Cassie; 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 15th from 5 to 7 pm and Tuesday, July 16th from 9 to 10 am at Bethel Mennonite Church, 2985 Bethel Lane, Sarasota, Florida 34240.  Funeral service will follow at 10:00 am.  Interment will be at Sunnyside Mennonite Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bayshore Church, PO Box 50157, Sarasota, Florida 34232 or Gator Wilderness Boys Camp, 44930 Farabee Road, Punta Gorda, Florida 33982.
