James C. Pantling

James C. Pantling, Jr. (Jim) passed away November 23, 2022. He was born September 22, 1942 in Buffalo, NY to James Pantling, Sr. (Lt Col USAF retired) and June Reesor Pantling. As his father was in the Air Force, the family lived in England, Alaska, Omaha, and Tampa, among other places. He attended Orlando Junior College, then transferred to University of South Florida, where he graduated with a BS in Geology in 1970. Jim served in the US Navy Reserves until after graduation from college, when he went on active duty serving on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. He went to Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. As an officer he was assigned to the Navy Communications Station in Guam. M.I. where he served as the Administration Officer from 1971 until 1974, and departed the Navy having achieved the rank of Lt (JG). After serving in the Navy, he returned with his family to Florida, working for Maas Brothers and Zales Jewelers, eventually coming to Sarasota in 1977. He became a US Postal Service Letter Carrier in 1978 until he retired in 2006. He was active in the USPS local union, including serving as President. He was an enthusiastic coin collector and enjoyed researching family ancestry. He enjoyed traveling when he was able and was very proud of his family's accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his father James C. Pantling, Sr. (1974); mother June Pantling Simonson (2017); his stepfather Alan (Douglas) Simonson (1996); brother Larry Pantling (1999); brother-in-law Dan Creighton (2015); sisters-in-law Joyce Kirk (2021), Ella Coyle (2022); and his second wife Patricia Pantling (2022). He is survived by: His sister - Peggy (Neal, daughter Lindsey) His three children from his first marriage to Sue Pantling (married from 1965 to 1984): Carey Pantling, Captain, US Navy, retired (Veronica, their sons Aaron, Adam, Nathan, and David), Jamie (daughter Tatum), and Kailee (Jody, and their children Joseph and Charlotte). His two children from his marriage to Patricia Roberts Pantling (They were married from 1989 until she passed January 2022): stepson, Matthew Roberts, Major, US Marine Corps, retired, (children Madison, Taylor, and Alistair) and daughter Cassie Pantling. His brothers-in-law Michael and Mark; and sisters-in-law Barbara (Brian), Elizabeth, Madonna, Mary Lou, and Aileen (Bruce) from Patricia's family. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 6, at 930 at Sarasota National Cemetery.
