John Angus Black

John Angus Black, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Sarasota, Florida. John was born on March 3, 1941, in Flint, Michigan, to William and Elizabeth Black. He grew up learning the value of hard work on his family’s farm, lessons that shaped the integrity and work ethic he carried throughout his life. John graduated from Flushing High School in 1958. He proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as part of the Military Police. After his military service, he continued his education at Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1970 and a Master’s degree in 1971. Before beginning his teaching career, John served his community as an EMT, driving an ambulance and caring for others in times of need. He went on to dedicate many years to education at Alma High School, where he taught wood shop, small engines, and drafting. Teaching was not just a profession for John—it was a calling that extended well beyond the classroom. An exceptionally skilled and passionate woodworker, John created beautiful furniture, detailed carvings, and finished several basements into warm living spaces. Among his most notable works was a hand-carved depiction of The Last Supper, spanning two feet by four feet—a testament to his patience, craftsmanship, and faith. John loved the game of golf and traveled throughout the state of Michigan playing courses with friends. One of his most memorable trips was traveling to Scotland to play the Old Course, a dream fulfilled. He also enjoyed teaching others golf, woodworking, and chess- always eager to share his knowledge. John never met a stranger. He had many close friends whom he considered family and was known for his generosity—willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He believed deeply in hard work, honesty, integrity, and kindness, values he lived by every day. Above all, John loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Nancy, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. He was a proud father to his children: Jennifer (Casey) Bradley, Theresa (Glen) Fish, and John (Lori) Black. His seven grandchildren—Zoe, Grant, Isabel, Georgia, Bree, Juliet, and Catherine—were his greatest source of pride and joy. John is also survived by his siblings Robert (Illa) Black and Bonnie (Bill) Friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Black, and his sister, Shirley (Glen) Velker. John Angus Black leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, service, generosity, and teaching that will continue through all who were fortunate enough to learn from and love him. A memorial service will be held on May 22 ,2026 at Clark Funeral Home in Mt.Pleasant, Michigan at 1 pm followed by a luncheon.
